What 'removing a password' actually means

PDF security has two distinct layers: an owner password (restricts printing and copying) and a user password (prevents opening). Our tool handles both. When you provide the correct password, pdf-lib re-writes the file without the encryption dictionary, producing an identical document that opens freely. It cannot crack or bypass a password you don't know — it only removes protection you already have the key for.

Why unlocking locally matters for privacy

Sending a password-protected document to an online service means two sensitive things travel together: the document content and the credential to read it. A local unlock sends neither. Your PDF and password stay on your device; only the output file is written to disk. This is especially important for financial statements, legal agreements, and any document protected for a reason.

    When this tool won't help

If you've forgotten or never had the password, removal isn't possible without brute-force tools that operate outside our scope. Some PDFs also use certificate-based encryption rather than password-based — these require the original certificate to unlock. For standard user and owner passwords that you own, this tool removes them instantly.

    A fair comparison

Neutral phrasing — we don't name specific tools. "As on most tools" describes common industry practice.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is this legal?

Removing password protection from a PDF you own or have permission to modify is legal in most jurisdictions. Do not use this tool to unlock documents you do not have the right to access.

Can it remove restrictions without a password?

No. The tool requires the correct password to decrypt the file. It does not brute-force or bypass encryption.

Does my password get stored anywhere?

Never. The password is used only in memory within this browser tab and discarded when processing completes. We have no server to store it on.
